Preventing Cancers

Cancer Screening  -Flexible Sigmoidoscopy reduces  Colorectal Cancer Deaths

Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure to detect colorectal cancers at an early stage. It is an easier procedure compared to Colonoscopy, which is lengthier and visualizes entire colon. In sigmoidoscopy only distant colon is evaluated, but chance of cancer is more in this location. In a large study involving more than 154,000 participants  in age group 55-74 yrs, two repeat sigmoidoscopies at 3or 5 yrs compared to standard care reduced the incidence of Colorectal cancer by 29% and mortality by 21%. Distal Colorectal incidence reduced by 29% and mortality by 50%. This study results advocate stronger use of sigmoidoscopy as a screening tool for Colorectal cancer.

Yearly Chest Xrays Do Not Protect From Lung Cancer Deaths

It is thought that annual xrays will protect from Lung cancer deaths. But one important study showed evidence to the contrary. This study involving 77,455 people randomly assigned to annual chest xrays for 4 years and 77,456 people assigned to usual care. There was no reduction in mortality in screened group.

Aspirin Protects from Cancer Deaths

Aspirin is the drug used for protection from strokes and Heart attacks. But analysis of data from 31 trials have shown another advantage of Aspirin use: reduction in cancer deaths. There was 15% reduction in Cancer deaths by taking regular aspirin for a period as short as three years. The reduction in mortality was even higher ( up to 37%)  for people taking aspirin for longer periods( 5 yrs or more)

Multivitamins reduces cancer incidence- US Study

A large randomized trial reported reduction incidence in incidence of cancer in men. By using multivitamins. After about 11 years there was a  modest but statistically significant reduction — specifically, an8% reduction in total cancer incidence. There was also 12% reduction in cancer mortality. The study was done by Dr. Gaziano, a researcher at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Center for Older Adult Health, Boston, Massachusetts. A large-scale, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Physicians' Health Study II) of 14 641 male US physicians initially aged 50 years or older (mean [SD] age, 64.3 [9.2] years, enrolled in a common multivitamin study that began in 1997 with treatment and follow-up through June 1, 2011.This is the largest study supporting role of multivitamins in reducing cancer incidence.

MDT in Cancer

Cancer is a disease which have to be treated by three modalities  surgery , medical onclogy and radiotherapy. The treatment team is called Multi Disciplinary Team(MDT). Multidisciplinary team consists of Surgeon, Medical Onclogist and Radiation  Oncologist. The team decides treatment of each cancer patient after diagnosing  and staging Cancer. The team decides which all modalities are to be incorporated to treatment algorithm and in which order. It is of prime importance , in view point of cure , that that cancer should be treated by MDT not by individual physician. In most modern cancer hospitals MDTteams decides cancer treatment and team evaluates response of treatment. The periodic review ensures that the treatment is working in right direction and there is no bad effects of treatment.Even after treatment the team follows up cancer patients for  sufficient period to ensure that cancer doesn 't come back.
