Personalised Medicine in Cancer
6:54 PM
Traditionally cancer has been treated with modalities like Surgery , Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy. But we know cancer is a common terminology for a heterogenous group of disease conditions. There are heterogenous groups of cells in each tumour created by various mutataions and each cancer has a lots of variation in each individual. This variation is expressed at genetic level ; but the end result of this is reflected in the biological behaviour. In simple words , a cancer like breast cancer may behave differently in different persons. This is due to inherent biological heterogenosity due to it's cellular origin. Now the research is ongoing to classify cancers based on molecular eitiology and decide treatment based on classification. For example breast cancer can be classified in to Luminal B, Luminal A, HER 2 neu, and Triple negative .Each type has variation in treatment. In future it is thought that each cancer will be diagnosed and classified at molecular level and treatment also will be decided accordingly.
