Breast conservation has less recurrence compared to Mastectomy

According to study published in JCO , in a subset of breast cancer patients called triple negative local recurrence was less after Breast Conservation Surgery than with mastectomy. This study result has becomes a shot in the arm for proponents of Breast Conservation Therapy. There is ample evidence available today to suggest bigger surgery doesn't result in better outcomes. This observation is applicable in accepting smaller surgical margins after surgery, avoiding axillary dissections for micro metastasis, avoiding MRI to detect other lesions in breast. The bottom line is relying on adjuvant chemo and radiation to replace for ablative surgical procedures.
